Ocean and Fish Mercury Levels Increasing

Keith D. Bishop, Clinical Nutritionist, B.Sc. Pharmacy - May 21, 2009

Pacific Ocean waters and fish have higher levels of mercury - and it’s going to get worse.

A recent study found water mercury concentrations have increased by 30% from 1990 to 1995. Researchers estimate that mercury water concentrations will double by 2050. Bacteria and algae in the water change the mercury into an organic methyl-mercury.

Reference Source: Sunderland, E. M., D. P. Krabbenhoft, J. W. Moreau, S. A. Strode, and W. M. Landing (2009), Mercury sources, distribution, and bioavailability in the North Pacific Ocean: Insights from data and models, Global Biogeochem. Cycles, 23, GB2010, doi:10.1029/2008GB003425.

The organic methyl-mercury is readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Organic mercury stays in the body for up to 4 months and binds to enzymes, proteins, and glutathione. Organic mercury accumulates in and affects the function of the liver, kidneys, brain and mitochondria (cellular energy).

Symptoms of excessive exposure to mercury include:
• Headache
• Fine tremor
• Increased salivation
• Excitability
• High blood pressure
• Skin rash
• Poor mental concentration
• Metallic taste

Mercury in water comes from coal fired electric generators and other manufacturing processes. The mercury contamination will continue to elevate as China and other Asian countries expand their manufacturing and electric generation capabilities.

Since mercury contamination is worldwide and is found in all surface waters you should do the following:
• Limit your consumption of fish high in mercury. A Mercury Fish Quick List is available.
• Test your body for mercury contamination (Heavy Metal Screening Test or Comprehensive Urine Element Profile)
• Chelate mercury and other toxic metals if necessary
